QUALICUM BEACH, BC - After thirty-five years of building their grocery business from a single store in Qualicum Beach to thirteen award-winning Vancouver Island supermarkets, Ken Schley and John Briuolo announce today that they are finally ready to, well, check out of the food business.
"It's been quite a ride," enthuses Schley, who has been the group's president since the very beginning. "And now it's time to pass the baton. We have had the time of our lives, and lived the dream of building something that is larger than the sum of its parts."
"To ensure continuity for our loyal customers and dedicated QFers, we're following through on a succession plan with an internally developed management team. Day to day operations will be led by Quality Foods co-founder Noel Hayward in the tradition of putting our QF customers, our QF people and our QF communities first. It's a people-based business and John and I leave the company in the capable hands of some of the most talented people in the industry."
Co-founder John Briuolo, who has been the face of Qualicum Foods for decades, believes that with competition in the industry being very aggressive, and on the island in particular, there is a need to keep growing the unique Quality Foods brand, and that requires many resources. "This move is the result of a successful long-term plan finally coming together," states John, "and now, with the company in the best position to grow and prosper, it's the right time to make this change."
According to Schley, his and Mr. Briuolo's interests will be transferred to their strategic partner of eight years, Mr. Jim Pattison, who has stated clearly that "business will continue as it has".
What's next for Ken and John after some much-needed R&R? "There is no shortage of business projects in progress that want our attention, so you'll see us out and about in the community as always," remarks Ken.
In the short term, the founding partners will do their part to ensure a smooth transition, with Ken and John remaining on as the principle landlords od several QF properties.
"Ken and I will always be grateful for the relationships we have made in the community and proud of the accomplishments of our people, and we appreciate everyone who has worked alongside of us, inside and outside the company to build something special. It's a unique company and a unique story, and this isn't the end of it by any means."
Quality Foods is a Platinum Member of the Canada's Best Managed Companies program, with award- winning stores across Vancouver Island and in Powell River.
